Originally from Pakistan, I moved to the United States 14 years ago to study computer science at Michigan State University. During and after completing my degree, I joined Broadcom Corp. first as an intern and then as a full time system test engineer. Later on, I joined Qualcomm as a senior software engineer. At Broadcom and Qualcomm I worked in the mobile chip testing division where I developed frameworks for test automation of mobile phone chips. I had the opportunity to work with several amazing people there and learned a lot.
I returned the following year to University of Iowa to begin my PhD. Through my studies, I have developed a passion for using machine learning to solve real world challenges. Using patient health data I focused on learning about norms in prescription practices. During my PhD studies, I joined Proctor and Gamble as a machine learning/data science intern, where I worked on predicting categories for consumer comments. I joined Mayo Health Clinic the next summer as an informatics intern, where I explored and worked on aspect based sentiment analysis methods and created guidelines for data annotation of patient forums. Both internships imparted me with valuable experiences and networking opportunities.
In my free time, I love to cook for my family and doing arts and crafts. I enjoy travel and hope to visit new places every year. I'm always open to new experiences, cultures, and ways of thinking.
